Obras reveals the 2020 ranking of the most outstanding companies in the sector in the country.
The real estate and construction sectors faced a complicated 2019, and 2020 is getting worse. Businesses in the sector are struggling to survive in the face of the collapse of investment with the current government, the coronavirus pandemic and the economic crisis it has caused. The 100 largest construction companies in Mexico, presented in this ranking that Obras elaborates every year, are not an exception.
The total results of the list, which covers the operations carried out in 2019, reflect the difficult panorama of the industry: the accumulated income of all the companies was 373,606 million pesos, a growth of only 1.3% with respect to the previous year, far from the 15.8% increase of the previous edition of the ranking. And the consolidated net profit was MxN80,042 million, 10% less than in 2018.
The transition from the government of Enrique Peña Nieto to that of Andrés Manuel López Obrador lasted longer than expected, which mainly affected public works construction and housing construction procedures. This context hurt the industry, which had already been suffering from a couple of years of declining production and which paused to wait for the results of the signing of the T-MEC.
Businesses chose to diversify and bet on the private sector: Fibers were capitalized and gave strength to the industrial sector, infrastructure expected greater investment at the road level from local governments, and construction and housing companies made their schemes more flexible to adapt to the circumstances. However, their plans were disrupted in 2020 by the health contingency. Today, the uncertainty is greater than ever.
